Dos and Don’ts of Conducting Fashion Photo Shoots

Pictures have become a mainstay in the life of every human being. It does not matter if it is a painting or a footage captured by a hidden spy cam. Motion activated hidden camera now help to conduct research in certain areas that may pose dangers to human life if done in person. How do these cameras work? They work by simply taking pictures. This is how far pictures can make a difference. A picture can help solve and close a tough case as pictures do not lie unless they are misinterpreted. Talking about pictures and interpretation, the commercial aspect of photography are making the most of these.

Virtually everything out there in the commercial world has a picture passing its message across. This ranges from movies, music albums, magazines, billboard adverts and so on. A lot of effort is put in to make those pictures look alive as they come out. They do not just appear there. It all begins with photo shoot session(s). After which the pictures are edited and made available to the public. This article will be very helpful if you want to conduct a photo shoot especially if it is fashion photo shoot. It will provide you with the dos and don’ts of conducting fashion photo shoot.

Do ask your client if what they would like to see in the photos.

This could be the foundation on which you would build your photo shoot. This is actually very important if you are working with a brand that needs the pictures for a commercial purpose. Even if your client are the ones that will model for you, it is still important that you get what they plan to capture. When you have done this, you can now respond to their ideas by telling them what you feel they need to know. Do you think they are missing something? Tell them. Do you think they need to remove somethings? Tell them. It is best you reach a consensus before you begin the photo shoot.

Do have some already made ideas you intend to work with.

This fundamental to virtually everything you want to do. If you do not have any idea you plan to work with, you will be confused as regards where to start working from. It could be your own idea and as well drawing inspiration the idea of someone else as long as you do not copy the person. It could be in form of a magazine of an old photo shoot you or someone else did before. It could also be a painting you saw or requested for from an artist. You should show this idea to your clients as they are the number one stakeholder in this case. However, it is important you always go with the flow. This brings us to my next point.

Do not get too frigid, do express yourself.

The reason for this is simple, photography is an art and art is a way of expressing one’s self. Fashion photography involves working with models. During a photo shoot, you can give the model or models and idea of what you want them to do and leave the rest to them. If they are professional models, it means that they already know what is involved and acting too directive may make them uncomfortable and unable to express themselves. This will make your pictures look stereotyped instead of looking natural. Do not over beat yourself and your models by enforcing an idea that does not seem feasible.

Don’t use the best, use the most suitable.

This aspect also falls in line with going with the flow. The idea of using the most suitable instead of the best applies to both background, models, effects, etc. The fact that a particular model is considered the best for a car photo shoot does not mean he or she is the most suitable for your photo shoot. The fact that every other photographer used a “cloud” background does not mean you should use a cloud background. The best picture in my opinion is that which the persons involved in those pictures express themselves.

The beat photo shoot is one where everyone does not leave after the photo shoot smiling. No piece of art is meaningless and photography is no different. Express yourself through your pictures and watch people appreciate you.
